Creating a Harmonious Living Space in ACEH
Through BerbagiRuang, we strive to create safe corridors for elephants and humans to coexist peacefully.
The Challenges We're Facing
Declining Elephant Population
Illegal Poaching

Habitat Loss
Eight elephant pockets that are the original habitat for Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) are in a very worrying condition. Land conversion into palm oil plantations, industrial forest plantations, and human settlements has threatened their existence.
Here are some examples:
- Only 1 individual left in Rokan Hilir and Batang Ulak
- Only 3 individuals left in Mahato-Barumun
- Only 5 individuals left in Balai Raja
- 50-60 individuals left in Giam Siak Kecil
- 30-38 individuals left in Tesso Nilo Utara
- 50-60 individuals left in Tesso Nilo Tenggara
Talang Forest for Passageways
The remaining Talang Forest is part of the Balai Raja Wildlife Reserve (SM). However, its condition is worrying because it has been converted into settlements, palm oil plantations, and even government offices.
Fragmented habitats make it increasingly difficult for elephants to find food and shelter.
Threatened by Development Projects
Until now, there are no records of development projects that consider the survival of protected wildlife, except for the Pekanbaru-Dumai Toll Road project.
Six special crossings for Sumatran elephants will soon be built in the Pekanbaru-Dumai Toll Road project so that protected wildlife can still roam freely in their habitats without disturbing road users.
